CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
The project is located in Plaça de les Glories, where three of the most important edges of the city of Barcelona are meeting. A new Masterplan, designed by Helio Piñón, try to improve the continuity in this area. It consists of two confronted system of tall buildings in the shape of "L", that system is broken in their ends where the diagonal street is crossed (Avinguda Diagonal). The Conservatory of Music is situated in the breaking point on the left side.
The building is perfectly integrated into the system. It is a parallelepiped of regular structure. Above it emerges a big volume in one side (the concert hall) and on the opposite side it is emptied with a patio. Both operations have the same proportion getting the balance of the building.
The main access is situated in a square where the bar pavilion and a parking access area. The building is slightly raised in relation to the level of the square.
It consists of ground floor, first floor and basement. On the ground floor are situated the largest spaces and the public uses (Hall, library, administration...). On the first floor are distributed the classrooms by groups according to the different uses.
The Concert Hall
The access to the large hall is through the big foyer next to the patio. Inside, big girders support the roof that raises enabling the natural light inside. It has a secondary access to the box seats on the first floor.
Both concert hall and classrooms are acoustically isolated. These last ones have a special construction system. They are like an independent floating boxes, preventing noise transmission.
